Yesterday i was early to rise. Like 5 AM early. I was so exhausted the night before i ended up crashing out before i could finish prepping for the Feast of the Mountains. I prepared enough food for 500, but ended up only serving like 250-300 which means i have a lot of cucumbers left over. An organic heirloom tomato and roasted beet salad in a berry vinaigrette on a lemon cucumber slice finished off with a sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds.
The table was simple. That's what happens when a plan gets thrown together last minute with little time for planning, and almost no access to car except to bum rides from people. So you borrow a vase from a friend, fill it with flowers from a flower shop along the way, take some tiles from the construction site that will soon be the restaurant, and presto! You have a simple but good-looking table setup. Would i have liked to have a little more? You bet, but i also love working with what i have and scavenging for an event. That's when you you can get creative. With a full kitchen i would have been serving on boring serving platters like everyone else.
So after a long day, when i got home i had a local organic salad for dinner. Then i treated myself to a cuban cigar and a soak in the hot tub. Not bad for a dough throwing kid from South Hamden.
MY CUBANS!!! Cigar are definitely a luxury item in Canada. There is like a 250% markup from US prices because of all the taxes. So a $10 stump is like $25, but it's made in Cuba. I could almost taste the communist revolution. Not really, but it was relaxing.
