Here i am being a literal and figurative tree hugger. Had i been wearing patcholi there would have been no question that i was being a total hippie.
I rode a bus and took a ferry to Vancouver Island on my weekend, just to hang out with some big old trees. I hung out with ancient cedars and douglas firs, some of which were well over 800 years old, so i guess i might be a hippie even if i don't do drugs or listen to phish.
The notches in this tree stump is where old time loggers inserted boards, so they could chop the tree where it is good and straight.
The largest tree in the forest was 9 meters in diameter and 76 meters tall.
Hanging out with those big old trees is awesome. I am grateful that some of these old growth forest still exist, but it sure does make me sad how quickly they are disappearing. I wonder why a tree isn't valuable enough to just be, and is only as valuable as the number of board feet or paper it could be turned into.
